7 Ways to make Hifz Fun
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Alhamdulillahi Robbil Alameen,
And peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Dearest Quran students and teachers, Assalamualaikum.
There was an evil principal (this is just a story) who had a fun-less childhood, so she couldn’t tolerate the word “fun”. She couldn’t even say f-f-f-f-f-uuu-n. 🙂
But we can have fun as well as learn hifz in a beautiful way. So how can we make hifz fun?
1 ✅ By reciting beautifully.
2 ✅ By looking at the Quran. Zoom in and focus on each word as you read. This is an amazing technique to concentrate, particularly if you know the meaning of each word.
3 ✅ By listening to amazing recitations! Try recitequran.com to listen to many beautiful qaris.
4 ✅ By playing Quran games.
Game #1 : Verse Before and After.
Someone reads a verse. And you have to guess the verse after (10 points) and the verse before (30 points).
Game #2 : Which Suran is this from?
Someone reads a verse. Then guess which surah its from. Want to try?
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
That’s right :)
Game #3: Surah chairs
You walk around a circle of chairs. Chairs are 1 less than the players.
Someone recites facing the other way. And you recite along with them as you walk around the circle.
When he stops quickly sit down! If you miss the chair, you’re out. Next round, reduce the number of chairs.
5 ✅ Work with thanks
اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا
Work, O family of David, in gratitude. (Surah Saba, 13)
We are so lucky to study the Quran! The Prophet ﷺ said (meaning): “The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it” (Bukhari).
Enjoy this blessing. Work with thanks. And remind others to be thankful.
6 ✅ Read / discuss verse meaning and stories.
This way the Quran will come alive.
When this is done in a deep way, where the person understands and internalizes what they are reading, then the impact is phenomenal.
People love stories. Use this to make matters fun :)
7 ✅ Rewards and Stories
What is the reward of reciting the Quran (10 good deeds every letter!)
What are the stories of people who have been through this journey before?
When doing hifz what happens if you don’t do it for Allah, but for show off (warning: don’t try this. It is dangerous! Auzubillah).
These discussions can set people in the right line of thinking for hifz. So have these conversations in class.
Try to make the student inspired deeply, plant the seeds to paradigms and principles they hold on for hifz. This way they will continue even when teachers are not there to motivate them, inshallah.

وَاذْكُرْنَ مَا يُتْلَىٰ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَالْحِكْمَةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ لَطِيفًا خَبِيرًا
And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allāh and wisdom. Indeed, Allāh is ever Subtle and Aware. (Surah Al Ahzab, 34)
